     This document describes the installation procedure	for NetBSD 7.0.1 on
     the _s_u_n_2 platform.	 It is available in four different formats titled
     _I_N_S_T_A_L_L_._e_x_t, where	_._e_x_t is	one of _._p_s, _._h_t_m_l, _._m_o_r_e, or _._t_x_t:

	   _._p_s	   PostScript.

	   _._h_t_m_l   Standard Internet HTML.

	   _._m_o_r_e   The enhanced	text format used on UNIX-like systems by the
		   more(1) and less(1) pager utility programs.	This is	the
		   format in which the on-line _m_a_n pages are generally pre-
		   sented.

	   _._t_x_t	   Plain old ASCII.

     You are reading the _m_o_r_e version.

   WWhhaatt	iiss NNeettBBSSDD??
     The NetBSD	Operating System is a fully functional Open Source UNIX-like
     operating system derived from the University of California, Berkeley Net-
     working Release 2 (Net/2),	4.4BSD-Lite, and 4.4BSD-Lite2 sources.	NetBSD
     runs on many different different system architectures (ports) across a
     variety of	distinct CPU families, and is being ported to more.  The
     NetBSD 7.0.1 release contains complete binary releases for	most of	these
     system architectures, with	preliminary support for	the others included in
     source form.  Please see the NetBSD website at hhttttpp::////wwwwww..NNeettBBSSDD..oorrgg// for
     information on them.)

     NetBSD is a completely integrated system.	In addition to its highly por-
     table, high performance kernel, NetBSD features a complete	set of user
     utilities,	compilers for several languages, the X Window System, firewall
     software and numerous other tools,	all accompanied	by full	source code.

     NetBSD is a creation of the members of the	Internet community.  Without
     the unique	cooperation and	coordination the net makes possible, NetBSD
     would not exist.

   CChhaannggeess BBeettwweeeenn TThhee NNeettBBSSDD 77..00 aanndd 77..00..11 RReelleeaasseess
     NetBSD 7.0.1 is the first critical/security update	of the NetBSD 7.0
     release branch.  It represents a selected subset of fixes deemed critical
     for security or stability reasons.

     The complete list of changes can be found in the CHANGES-7.0.1:

     The following features are	to be removed from NetBSD in the future:

     ++oo	 dhclient(8) and rtsol(8) in favor of dhcpcd(8).

     ++oo	 groff(1).  Man	pages are now handled with mandoc(1), and groff(1) can
	 still be found	in pkgsrc as _t_e_x_t_p_r_o_c_/_g_r_o_f_f.

     ++oo	 rtsol(8) and rtsold(8).

   TThhee NNeettBBSSDD FFoouunnddaattiioonn
     The NetBSD	Foundation is a	tax exempt, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corpora-
     tion that devotes itself to the traditional goals and Spirit of the
     NetBSD Project and	owns the trademark of the word ``NetBSD''.  It sup-
     ports the design, development, and	adoption of NetBSD worldwide.  More

     _i_m_a_g_e_s_/	   Images (ISO 9660 or USB) for	installing NetBSD.  Depending
		   on your system, these may be	bootable.

     _s_o_u_r_c_e_/	   Source distribution sets; see below.

     In	addition to the	files and directories listed above, there is one
     directory per architecture, for each of the architectures for which
     NetBSD 7.0.1 has a	binary distribution.

     The source	distribution sets can be found in subdirectories of the	_s_o_u_r_c_e
     subdirectory of the distribution tree.  They contain the complete sources
     to	the system.  The source	distribution sets are as follows:

     ggnnuussrrcc    This set	contains the ``gnu'' sources, including	the source for
	       the compiler, assembler,	groff, and the other GNU utilities in
	       the binary distribution sets.

     sshhaarreessrrcc  This set	contains the ``share'' sources,	which include the
	       sources for the man pages not associated	with any particular
	       program;	the sources for	the typesettable document set; the
	       dictionaries; and more.

     ssrrcc       This set	contains all of	the base NetBSD	7.0.1 sources which
	       are not in ggnnuussrrcc, sshhaarreessrrcc, or ssyyssssrrcc.

     ssyyssssrrcc    This set	contains the sources to	the NetBSD 7.0.1 kernel	for
	       all architectures as well as the	config(1) utility.

     xxssrrcc      This set	contains the sources to	the X Window System.

     All the above source sets are located in the _s_o_u_r_c_e_/_s_e_t_s subdirectory of
     the distribution tree.

     The source	sets are distributed as	compressed tar files.  Except for the
     ppkkggssrrcc set, which is traditionally	unpacked into _/_u_s_r_/_p_k_g_s_r_c, all sets
     may be unpacked into _/_u_s_r_/_s_r_c with	the command:

     In	each of	the source distribution	set directories, there are files which
     contain the checksums of the files	in the directory:

	   MD5	   MD5 digests in the format produced by the command:
		   cckkssuumm --aa MMDD55	_f_i_l_e.

	   SHA512  SHA512 digests in the format	produced by the	command:
		   cckkssuumm --aa SSHHAA551122 _f_i_l_e.

     The SHA512	digest is safer, but MD5 checksums are provided	so that	a
     wider range of operating systems can check	the integrity of the release
     files.

     _N_e_t_B_S_D_/_s_u_n_2 _s_u_b_d_i_r_e_c_t_o_r_y _s_t_r_u_c_t_u_r_e

     The sun2-specific portion of the NetBSD 7.0.1 release is found in the
     _s_u_n_2 subdirectory of the distribution: _._._._/_N_e_t_B_S_D_-_7_._0_._1_/_s_u_n_2_/.  It	con-
     tains the following files and directories:

		   file.  The _._m_o_r_e file contains underlined text using	the
		   more(1) conventions for indicating italic and bold display.

		   _k_e_r_n_e_l_/
			    _n_e_t_b_s_d_-_G_E_N_E_R_I_C_._g_z
				       A gzipped NetBSD	kernel containing code
				       for everything supported	in this
				       release.
		   _s_e_t_s_/    sun2 binary	distribution sets; see below.
     _i_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n_/
		   _m_i_n_i_r_o_o_t_/  sun2 miniroot file system	image; see below.

     _B_i_n_a_r_y _d_i_s_t_r_i_b_u_t_i_o_n _s_e_t_s

     The NetBSD	sun2 binary distribution sets contain the binaries which com-
     prise the NetBSD 7.0.1 release for	sun2.  The binary distribution sets
     can be found in the _s_u_n_2_/_b_i_n_a_r_y_/_s_e_t_s subdirectory of the NetBSD 7.0.1
     distribution tree,	and are	as follows:

     bbaassee     The NetBSD 7.0.1 sun2 bbaassee binary	distribution.  You _m_u_s_t
	      install this distribution	set.  It contains the base NetBSD
	      utilities	that are necessary for the system to run and be	mini-
	      mally functional.

     ccoommpp     Things needed for	compiling programs.  This set includes the
	      system include files (_/_u_s_r_/_i_n_c_l_u_d_e) and the various system
	      libraries	(except	the shared libraries, which are	included as
	      part of the bbaassee set).  This set also includes the manual	pages
	      for all of the utilities it contains, as well as the system call
	      and library manual pages.

     eettcc      This distribution	set contains the system	configuration files
	      that reside in _/_e_t_c and in several other places.	This set _m_u_s_t
	      be installed if you are installing the system from scratch, but
	      should _n_o_t be used if you	are upgrading.

     ggaammeess    This set includes	the games and their manual pages.

     kkeerrnn--GGEENNEERRIICC
	      This set contains	a NetBSD/sun2 7.0.1 GENERIC kernel, named
	      _/_n_e_t_b_s_d.	You _m_u_s_t install this distribution set.

     mmaann      This set includes	all of the manual pages	for the	binaries and
	      other software contained in the bbaassee set.	 Note that it does not
	      include any of the manual	pages that are included	in the other
	      sets.

     mmiisscc     This set includes	the system dictionaries, the typesettable doc-
	      ument set, and other files from _/_u_s_r_/_s_h_a_r_e.

     mmoodduulleess  This set includes	kernel modules to add functionality to a run-
	      ning system.

     tteexxtt     This set includes	NetBSD's text processing tools,	including
	      groff(1),	all related programs, and their	manual pages.

     NetBSD maintains its own set of sources for the X Window System in	order
     to	assure tight integration and compatibility.  NetBSD/sun2 currently
     does not ship with	an X server or X clients.

     The sun2 binary distribution sets are distributed as gzipped tar files
     named with	the extension ..ttggzz, e.g.  _b_a_s_e_._t_g_z.

     The instructions given for	extracting the source sets work	equally	well
     for the binary sets, but it is worth noting that if you use that method,
     the filenames stored in the sets are relative and therefore the files are
     extracted _b_e_l_o_w _t_h_e _c_u_r_r_e_n_t _d_i_r_e_c_t_o_r_y.  Therefore,	if you want to extract
     the binaries into your system, i.e.  replace the system binaries with
     them, you have to run the ttaarr --xxzzppff command from the root directory ( _/ )
     of	your system.

     There is a	collection of Sun2 kernels in the _s_u_n_2_/_b_i_n_a_r_y_/_k_e_r_n_e_l subdirec-
     tory of the NetBSD	7.0.1 distribution.  The one named _n_e_t_b_s_d_-_R_A_M_D_I_S_K_._g_z
     contain a root file system	image and should only be used for the initial
     installation.  The	others are included for	convenience.  (Most people
     will want to use _n_e_t_b_s_d_-_G_E_N_E_R_I_C_._g_z	or _n_e_t_b_s_d_-_F_O_U_R_M_E_G_._g_z as	appropriate.)
     Please note that these kernels are	simply gzipped and are not tar ar-
     chives.

     _N_o_t_e_:  Each directory in the sun2 binary distribution also	has its	own
	    checksum files, just as the	source distribution does.

   NNeettBBSSDD//ssuunn22 SSyysstteemm RReeqquuiirreemmeennttss aanndd SSuuppppoorrtteedd DDeevviicceess
     NetBSD/sun2 7.0.1 runs on Multibus	Sun2 machines, including:

	   2/120    2/170    2/100U

     The minimal configuration requires	4 MB of	RAM and	about 130 MB of	disk
     space.  To	install	the entire system requires much	more disk space.  To
     compile the system, more RAM is recommended.  Good	performance requires 7
     MB	of RAM.	 A good	rule of	thumb is to have a swap	partition twice	the
     size of the amount	of RAM in your machine.	 You will probably want	to
     compile your own kernel, as GENERIC is large and bulky to accommodate all
     people.

     Note that the sun2	installation procedure uses a _m_i_n_i_r_o_o_t image which is
     placed into the swap area of the disk.  The swap partition	must be	at
     least as large as the miniroot image (12 MB).

     If	it's not on this list, there is	no support for it in this release.

   GGeettttiinngg tthhee NNeettBBSSDD SSyysstteemm oonn	ttoo UUsseeffuull MMeeddiiaa
     Installation is supported from several media types, including:
	   ++oo   Tape
	   ++oo   NFS
	   ++oo   CD-ROM
	   ++oo   FTP

     _N_o_t_e_:  Installing on a `bare' machine requires some bootable device;
	    either a tape drive	or Sun-compatible NFS server.

     The procedure for transferring the	distribution sets onto installation
     media depends on the type of media.  Instructions for each	type of	media
     are given below.

     In	order to create	installation media, you	will need all the files	in the
     directory

	   _._._._/_N_e_t_B_S_D_-_7_._0_._1_/_s_u_n_2_/

     _C_r_e_a_t_i_n_g _b_o_o_t_/_i_n_s_t_a_l_l _t_a_p_e_s

     Installing	from tape is the simplest method of all.  This method uses two
     tapes; one	called the _b_o_o_t	tape, and another called the _i_n_s_t_a_l_l tape.

     The boot tape is created as follows:

     The install tape is created as follows:

     If	the tapes do not work as expected, you may need	to explicitly set the
     EOF mark at the end of each tape segment.	It may also be necessary to
     use the ccoonnvv==oossyynncc	argument to dd(1).  Note that this argument is incom-
     patible with the bbss== argument.  Consult the tape-related manual pages on
     the system	where the tapes	are created for	more details.

     _B_o_o_t_/_I_n_s_t_a_l_l _f_r_o_m _N_F_S _s_e_r_v_e_r

     If	your machine has a disk	and network connection,	but no tape drive, it
     may be convenient for you to install NetBSD over the network.  This
     involves temporarily booting your machine over NFS, just long enough so
     you can initialize	its disk.  This	method requires	that you have access
     to	an NFS server on your network so you can configure it to support disk-
     less boot for your	machine.  Configuring the NFS server is	normally a
     task for a	system administrator, and is not trivial.

     If	you are	using a	NetBSD system as the boot-server, have a look at the
     diskless(8) manual	page for guidelines on how to proceed with this.  If
     the server	runs another operating system, consult the documentation that
     came with it (i.e.	 add_client(8) on SunOS).

     When instructed to	boot over the network, your sun2 expects to be able to
     download first and	second stage bootstrap programs	via ND,	the Network
     Disk protocol.  The ndbootd(8) program will attempt to serve a second-
     stage bootstrap file using	a name derived from the	machine's recently
     acquired IP address and an	extension which	corresponds to the machine
     architecture.  (It	may be handy to	have a hexadecimal calculator for this
     next step.)  The filename prefix is created by converting the machine's
     assigned IP address into hexadecimal, most-significant octet first, using
     uppercase characters for the non-decimal (A-F) digits.  The filename suf-
     fix used by all sun2 machines is _S_U_N_2.

     For example, a sun2 which has been	assigned IP address 130.115.144.11
     will be served a second-stage bootstrap file named	_8_2_7_3_9_0_0_B_._S_U_N_2.	Nor-
     mally, this file is a symbolic link to the	NetBSD/sun2 _n_e_t_b_o_o_t program,
     which should be located in	a place	where the ndbootd(8) daemon can	find
     it.  The _n_e_t_b_o_o_t program may be found in the _i_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n_/_n_e_t_b_o_o_t direc-
     tory of this distribution.

     The netboot program will query a bootparamd server	to find	the NFS	server
     address and path name for its root, and then load a kernel	from that
     location.	The server should have a copy of the _n_e_t_b_s_d_-_R_A_M_D_I_S_K kernel in
     the root area for your client, hard-linked	under the names	_n_e_t_b_s_d and
     _v_m_u_n_i_x (no	other files are	needed in the client root) and _/_e_t_c_/_b_o_o_t_p_a_r_a_m_s
     on	the server should have an entry	for your client	and its	root direc-
     tory.  The	client will need access	to the miniroot	image, which can be
     provided using NFS	or remote shell.

     If	you will be installing NetBSD on several clients, it may be useful to
     know that you can use a single NFS	root for all the clients as long as
     they only use the _n_e_t_b_s_d_-_R_A_M_D_I_S_K kernel.  There will be no	conflict
     between clients because the RAM-disk kernel will not use the NFS root.
     No	swap file is needed; the RAM-disk kernel does not use that either.

     _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_/_U_p_g_r_a_d_e _f_r_o_m _C_D_-_R_O_M

     This method requires that you boot	from another device (i.e. tape or net-
     work, as described	above).	You may	need to	make a boot tape on another
     machine using the files provided on the CD-ROM. Once you have booted
     netbsd-rd (the RAM-disk kernel) and loaded	the miniroot, you can load any
     of	the distribution sets directly from the	CD-ROM.	 The iinnssttaallll program
     in	the miniroot automates the work	required to mount the CD-ROM and
     extract the files.

     _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_/_U_p_g_r_a_d_e _v_i_a _F_T_P

     This method requires that you boot	from another device (i.e. tape or net-
     work, as described	above).	You may	need to	make a boot tape on another
     machine using the files in	_i_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n_/_t_a_p_e_i_m_a_g_e and _b_i_n_a_r_y_/_k_e_r_n_e_l
     (which you	get via	FTP).  Once you	have booted _n_e_t_b_s_d_-_R_A_M_D_I_S_K (the	RAM-
     disk kernel) and loaded the miniroot, you can load	any of the distribu-
     tion sets over the	net using FTP.	The iinnssttaallll program in the miniroot
     automates the work	required to configure the network interface and	trans-
     fer the files.

     The preparations for this installation/upgrade method are easy; all you
     make sure that there's some FTP site from which you can retrieve the
     NetBSD distribution when you're about to install or upgrade.  You need to
     know the numeric IP address of that site, and, if it's not	on a network
     directly connected	to the machine on which	you're installing or upgrading
     NetBSD, you need to know the numeric IP address of	the router closest to
     the NetBSD	machine.  Finally, you need to know the	numeric	IP address of
     the NetBSD	machine	itself.

   PPrreeppaarriinngg yyoouurr SSyysstteemm ffoorr NNeettBBSSDD iinnssttaallllaattiioonn
     Sun2 machines usually need	little or no preparation before	installing
     NetBSD, other than	the usual, well	advised	precaution of _b_a_c_k_i_n_g _u_p _a_l_l
     _d_a_t_a on any attached storage devices.

     You will need to know the SCSI target ID of the drive on which you	will
     install NetBSD.

     _N_o_t_e_:  SunOS on the sun2 uses confusing names for the SCSI	devices: tar-
	    get	1 is sd2, target 2 is sd4, etc.

   IInnssttaalllliinngg tthhee NNeettBBSSDD SSyysstteemm
     Installing	NetBSD is a relatively complex process,	but if you have	this
     document in hand it should	not be too difficult.

     There are several ways to install NetBSD onto your	disk.  If your machine
     has a tape	drive the easiest way is _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g _f_r_o_m _t_a_p_e (details below).
     If	your machine is	on a network with a suitable NFS server, then
     _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g	_f_r_o_m _N_F_S is the	next best method.  Otherwise, if you have
     another Sun machine running SunOS you can initialize the disk on that
     machine and then move the disk.  (Installing from SunOS is	not recom-
     mended.)

     _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g	_f_r_o_m _t_a_p_e

     Create the	NetBSD/sun2 7.0.1 boot tape as described in the	section	enti-
     tled _C_r_e_a_t_i_n_g _b_o_o_t_/_i_n_s_t_a_l_l	_t_a_p_e_s and boot the tape.  At the PROM monitor
     prompt, use one of	the commands:

	   >bb sstt(())
	   >bb sstt((00,,88,,00))

     The first example will use	the tape on SCSI target	4, where the second
     will use SCSI target 5.  The > is the monitor prompt.

     After the tape loads, you should see many lines of	configuration mes-
     sages, and	then the following `welcome' screen:

		   Welcome to the NetBSD/sun2 RAMDISK root!

	   This	environment is designed	to do only three things:
	   1:  Partition your disk (use	the command:  edlabel /dev/rsd0c)
	   2:  Copy a miniroot image into the swap partition  (/dev/rsd0b)
	   3:  Reboot (using the swap partition, i.e. /dev/sd?b).

	   Note	that the sun2 firmware cannot boot from	a partition located
	   more	than 1 GB from the beginning of	the disk, so the swap partition
	   should be completely	below the 1 GB boundary.

	   Copying the miniroot	can be done several ways, allowing
	   the source of the miniroot image to be on any of these:
	       boot tape,  NFS server, TFTP server, rsh	server

	   The easiest is loading from tape, which is done as follows:
		   mt -f /dev/nrst0 rewind
		   mt -f /dev/nrst0 fsf	2
		   dd if=/dev/nrst0 of=/dev/rsd0b bs=32k conv=sync
	   (For	help with other	methods, please	see the	install	notes.)

	   To reboot using the swap partition, first use "halt",
	   then	at the PROM monitor prompt use a command like:
		   b sd(,,1) -s

	   To view this	message	again, type:  cat /.welcome

     Copy the miniroot as described in the welcome message, and	reboot from
     that just installed miniroot.  See	the section entitled _B_o_o_t_i_n_g _t_h_e
     _m_i_n_i_r_o_o_t for details.

     _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g	_f_r_o_m _N_F_S

     Before you	can install from NFS, you must have already configured your
     NFS server	to support your	machine	as a diskless client.  Instructions
     for configuring the server	are found in the section entitled _G_e_t_t_i_n_g _t_h_e
     _N_e_t_B_S_D _S_y_s_t_e_m _o_n_t_o	_U_s_e_f_u_l _M_e_d_i_a above.

     First, at the Sun PROM monitor prompt, enter a boot command using the
     network interface as the boot device.  If your machine has	Intel Ether-
     net, this is _i_e, and if it	has 3Com Ethernet, this	is _e_c.	Examples:

	   >bb iiee(()) --ss
	   >bb eecc(()) --ss

     After the boot program loads the RAMDISK kernel, you should see the wel-
     come screen as shown in the _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g _f_r_o_m _t_a_p_e section above.  You must
     configure the network interface before you	can use	any network resources.
     For example the command:

	   ssh>	iiffccoonnffiigg iiee00 iinneett 119922..223333..2200..119988 uupp

     will bring	up the network interface with that address.  The next step is
     to	copy the miniroot from your server.  This can be done using either NFS
     or	remote shell.  (In the examples	that follow, the server	has IP address
     192.233.20.195.)  You may then need to add	a default route	if the server
     is	on a different subnet:

	   ssh>	rroouuttee aadddd ddeeffaauulltt 119922..223333..2200..225555 11

     You can look at the route table using:

	   ssh>	rroouuttee sshhooww

     Now mount the NFS file system containing the miniroot image:

	   ssh>	mmoouunntt --oo rrddoonnllyy,,--rr==11002244	119922..223333..2200..119955:://sseerrvveerr//ppaatthh //mmnntt

     The procedure is simpler and much faster if you have space	for an
     expanded (not compressed) copy of the miniroot image.  In that case:

	   ssh>	dddd iiff==//mmnntt//mmiinniirroooott..ffss ooff==//ddeevv//rrssdd00bb bbss==88kk

     Otherwise,	you will need to use zzccaatt to expand the	miniroot image while
     copying.  This is tricky because the sssshh program (small shell) does not
     handle sh(1) pipeline syntax.  Instead, you first run the reader in the
     background	with its input set to _/_d_e_v_/_p_i_p_e	and then run the other program
     in	the foreground with its	output to _/_d_e_v_/_p_i_p_e.  The result looks like
     this:

	   ssh>	rruunn --bbgg	dddd iiff==//ddeevv//ppiippee	ooff==//ddeevv//rrssdd00bb oobbss==88kk

     To	load the miniroot using	rsh to the server, you would use a pair	of
     commands similar to the above.  Here is another example:

	   ssh>	rruunn --oo //ddeevv//ppiippee rrsshh 119922..223333..2200..119955 zzccaatt mmiinniirroooott..ffss..ggzz

     Note that decompression on	a sun2 is _e_x_t_r_e_m_e_l_y slow, be prepared to wait.
     For this reason, expanding	the miniroot image on the NFS server is	highly
     recommended.

     Once the miniroot has been	copied using one of the	above methods, you
     reboot from that just installed miniroot.	See the	section	entitled
     _B_o_o_t_i_n_g _t_h_e _m_i_n_i_r_o_o_t for details.

     _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g	_f_r_o_m _S_u_n_O_S

     To	install	NetBSD/sun2 onto a machine already running SunOS, you will
     need the miniroot image (miniroot.fs.gz) and some means to	decompress it.

     First, boot SunOS and place the miniroot file onto	the hard drive.	 If
     you do not	have ggzziipp for SunOS, you will need to decompress the image
     elsewhere before you can use it.

     Next, bring SunOS down to single user mode	to insure that nothing will be
     using the swap space on your drive.  To be	extra safe, reboot the machine
     into single-user mode rather than using the sshhuuttddoowwnn command.

     Now copy the miniroot image onto your swap	device (here _/_d_e_v_/_r_s_d_0_b) with
     the command

	   ggzziipp	--ddcc mmiinniirroooott..ffss..ggzz || dddd	ooff==//ddeevv//rrssdd00bb oobbss==3322kk

     or	if you have already decompressed the miniroot

	   dddd iiff==mmiinniirroooott..ffss ooff==//ddeevv//rrssdd00bb oobbss==3322kk

     Finally, reboot the machine and instruct the PROM to boot from the	swap
     device as described in the	next section.

     _B_o_o_t_i_n_g _t_h_e _M_i_n_i_r_o_o_t

     If	the machine is not already at the PROM monitor,	run the	_h_a_l_t command.

     If	the miniroot was installed on partition	`b' of the disk	with SCSI tar-
     get ID=0 then the PROM boot command would be:

	   >bb ssdd((00,,00,,11))	--ss

     With SCSI target ID=2, the	PROM is:

	   >bb ssdd((00,,1100,,11)) --ss

     The numbers in parentheses	above are:
	   1.	controller (usually zero)
	   2.	unit number (SCSI-ID * 8, in hexadecimal)
	   3.	partition number

     _M_i_n_i_r_o_o_t _i_n_s_t_a_l_l _p_r_o_g_r_a_m

     The miniroot's install program is very simple to use.  It will guide you
     through the entire	process, and is	well automated.	 Additional improve-
     ments are planned for future releases.

     The miniroot's install program will:

	   ++oo   Allow you to place disklabels on	additional disks.  The disk we
	       are installing on should	already	have been partitioned using
	       the RAMDISK kernel.

	   ++oo   Create file systems on target partitions.

	   ++oo   Allow you to set	up your	system's network configuration.
	       Remember	to specify host	names without the domain name appended
	       to the end.  For	example	use foo	instead	of foo.bar.org.	 If,
	       during the process of configuring the network interfaces, you
	       make a mistake, you will	be able	to re-configure	that interface
	       by simply selecting it for configuration	again.

	   ++oo   Mount target file systems.  You will be given the opportunity
	       to manually edit	the resulting _/_e_t_c_/_f_s_t_a_b.

	   ++oo   Extract binary sets from	the media of your choice.

	   ++oo   Copy configuration information gathered during the installation
	       process to your root file system	(_/).

	   ++oo   Make device nodes in your root file system under	_/_d_e_v.

	   ++oo   Copy a new kernel onto your root	partition (_/).

	   ++oo   Install a new boot block.

	   ++oo   Check your file systems for integrity.

     First-time	installation on	a system through a method other	than the
     installation program is possible, but strongly discouraged.

   PPoosstt	iinnssttaallllaattiioonn sstteeppss
     Once you've got the operating system running, there are a few things you
     need to do	in order to bring the system into a properly configured	state.
     The most important	steps are described below.

     1.	  Before all else, read	postinstall(8).

     2.	  Configuring _/_e_t_c_/_r_c_._c_o_n_f

	  If you or the	installation software haven't done any configuration
	  of _/_e_t_c_/_r_c_._c_o_n_f (ssyyssiinnsstt normally will), the system will drop	you
	  into single user mode	on first reboot	with the message

		/etc/rc.conf is	not configured.	Multiuser boot aborted.

	  and with the root file system	(_/) mounted read-only.	When the sys-
	  tem asks you to choose a shell, simply press RETURN to get to	a
	  _/_b_i_n_/_s_h prompt.  If you are asked for	a terminal type, respond with
	  vvtt222200	(or whatever is	appropriate for	your terminal type) and	press
	  RETURN.  You may need	to type	one of the following commands to get
	  your delete key to work properly, depending on your keyboard:
		# ssttttyy eerraassee ''^^hh''
		# ssttttyy eerraassee ''^^??''
	  At this point, you need to configure at least	one file in the	_/_e_t_c
	  directory.  You will need to mount your root file system read/write
	  with:
		# //ssbbiinn//mmoouunntt --uu --ww //
	  Change to the	_/_e_t_c directory and take	a look at the _/_e_t_c_/_r_c_._c_o_n_f
	  file.	 Modify	it to your tastes, making sure that you	set
	  rc_configured=YES so that your changes will be enabled and a multi-
	  user boot can	proceed.  Default values for the various programs can
	  be found in _/_e_t_c_/_d_e_f_a_u_l_t_s_/_r_c_._c_o_n_f, where some	in-line	documentation
	  may be found.	 More complete documentation can be found in
	  rc.conf(5).

	  When you have	finished editing _/_e_t_c_/_r_c_._c_o_n_f, type eexxiitt at the	prompt
	  to leave the single-user shell and continue with the multi-user
	  boot.

	  Other	values that may	need to	be set in _/_e_t_c_/_r_c_._c_o_n_f for a networked
	  environment are _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e and possibly	_d_e_f_a_u_l_t_r_o_u_t_e.  You may also
	  need to add an _i_f_c_o_n_f_i_g___i_n_t for your <int> network interface,	along
	  the lines of

		ifconfig_le0="inet 192.0.2.123 netmask 255.255.255.0"

	  or, if you have _m_y_n_a_m_e_._m_y_._d_o_m	in _/_e_t_c_/_h_o_s_t_s:

		ifconfig_le0="inet myname.my.dom netmask 255.255.255.0"

	  To enable proper hostname resolution,	you will also want to add an
	  _/_e_t_c_/_r_e_s_o_l_v_._c_o_n_f file	or (if you are feeling a little	more adventur-
	  ous) run named(8).  See resolv.conf(5) or named(8) for more informa-
	  tion.

	  Instead of manually configuring networking, DHCP can be used by set-
	  ting dhcpcd=YES in _/_e_t_c_/_r_c_._c_o_n_f.

     3.	  Logging in

	  After	reboot,	you can	log in as root at the login prompt.  If	you
	  didn't set a password	in ssyyssiinnsstt, there is no	initial	password.  You
	  should create	an account for yourself	(see below) and	protect	it and
	  the ``root'' account with good passwords.  By	default, root login
	  from the network is disabled (even via ssh(1)).  One way to become
	  root over the	network	is to log in as	a different user that belongs
	  to group ``wheel'' (see group(5)) and	use su(1) to become root.

     4.	  Adding accounts

	  Use the useradd(8) command to	add accounts to	your system.  Do not
	  edit _/_e_t_c_/_p_a_s_s_w_d directly! See vipw(8) and pwd_mkdb(8) if you	want
	  to edit the password database.

     5.	  Installing third party packages

	  If you wish to install any of	the software freely available for
	  UNIX-like systems you	are strongly advised to	first check the	NetBSD
	  package system, pkgsrc.  pkgsrc automatically	handles	any changes
	  necessary to make the	software run on	NetBSD.	 This includes the
	  retrieval and	installation of	any other packages the software	may
	  depend upon.

	  ++oo   More information on the package system is	available at
		    hhttttpp::////wwwwww..NNeettBBSSDD..oorrgg//ddooccss//ssooffttwwaarree//ppaacckkaaggeess..hhttmmll

	  ++oo   A	list of	available packages suitable for	browsing is at

	  ++oo   Precompiled binaries can be found	at
		    ffttpp::////ffttpp..NNeettBBSSDD..oorrgg//ppuubb//ppkkggssrrcc//ppaacckkaaggeess//NNeettBBSSDD//
	      usually in the _s_u_n_2_/_7_._0_._1_/_A_l_l subdir.  If	you installed pkgin(1)
	      in the ssyyssiinnsstt post-installation configuration menu, you can use
	      it to automatically install binary packages over the network.
	      Assuming that _/_u_s_r_/_p_k_g_/_e_t_c_/_p_k_g_i_n_/_r_e_p_o_s_i_t_o_r_i_e_s_._c_o_n_f is correctly
	      configured, you can install them with the	following commands:

	      ##	ppkkggiinn iinnssttaallll ttccsshh
	      ##	ppkkggiinn iinnssttaallll bbaasshh
	      ##	ppkkggiinn iinnssttaallll ppeerrll
	      ##	ppkkggiinn iinnssttaallll aappaacchhee

	      _N_o_t_e_:  Some mirror sites don't mirror the	_/_p_u_b_/_p_k_g_s_r_c directory.

	      The above	commands will install the Tenex-csh and	Bourne Again
	      shells, the Perl programming language, Apache web	server,	KDE
	      desktop environment and the Firefox web browser as well as all
	      the packages they	depend on.

	  ++oo   If you did not install it	from the ssyyssiinnsstt post-installation
	      configuration menu, the pkgsrc(7)	framework for compiling	pack-
	      ages can be obtained by retrieving the file
		    ffttpp::////ffttpp..NNeettBBSSDD..oorrgg//ppuubb//ppkkggssrrcc//ppkkggssrrcc..ttaarr..ggzz.
	      It is typically extracted	into _/_u_s_r_/_p_k_g_s_r_c (though other loca-
	      tions work fine) with the	commands:

		    # ccdd //uussrr
		    # ttaarr --zzxxppff	ppkkggssrrcc..ttaarr..ggzz

	      After extracting,	see the	_d_o_c_/_p_k_g_s_r_c_._t_x_t file in the extraction
	      directory	(e.g., _/_u_s_r_/_p_k_g_s_r_c_/_d_o_c_/_p_k_g_s_r_c_._t_x_t) for more informa-
	      tion.

     6.	  Misc

	  ++oo   Edit _/_e_t_c_/_m_a_i_l_/_a_l_i_a_s_e_s to	forward	root mail to the right place.
	      Don't forget to run newaliases(1)	afterwards.

	  ++oo   Edit _/_e_t_c_/_r_c_._l_o_c_a_l to run	any local daemons you use.

	  ++oo   Many of the _/_e_t_c files are documented in section 5 of the	man-
	      ual; so just invoking

		    # mmaann 55 _f_i_l_e_n_a_m_e

	      is likely	to give	you more information on	these files.

   UUppggrraaddiinngg aa pprreevviioouussllyy--iinnssttaalllleedd NNeettBBSSDD SSyysstteemm
     It	is possible to easily upgrade your existing NetBSD/sun2	system using
     the upgrade program in the	miniroot.  If you wish to upgrade your system
     by	this method, simply select the uuppggrraaddee option once the miniroot	has
     booted.  The upgrade program with then guide you through the procedure.
     The upgrade program will:

	   ++oo   Enable the network based	on your	system's current network con-
	       figuration.

	   ++oo   Mount your existing file	systems.

	   ++oo   Extract binary sets from	the media of your choice.

	   ++oo   Make new	device nodes in	your root file system under _/_d_e_v.

	   ++oo   Copy a new kernel onto your root	partition (_/).

	       _N_o_t_e_:  the existing kernel _w_i_l_l _n_o_t be backed up; doing so
		      would be pointless, since	older kernels may not be capa-
		      ble of running NetBSD 7.0.1 executables.

	   ++oo   Install a new boot block.

	   ++oo   Check your file systems for integrity.

     Using the miniroot's upgrade program is the preferred method of upgrading
     your system.

     However, it is possible to	upgrade	your system manually.  To do this,
     follow the	following procedure:

	   ++oo   Place _a_t	_l_e_a_s_t the bbaassee binary set in a file system accessible
	       to the target machine.  A local file system is preferred, since
	       the NFS subsystem in the	NetBSD 7.0.1 kernel may	be incompati-
	       ble with	your old binaries.

	   ++oo   Back up your pre-existing kernel	and copy the 7.0.1 kernel into
	       your root partition (_/).

	   ++oo   Reboot with the 7.0.1 kernel into single-user mode.  (Otherwise
	       you can not install the boot block.)

	   ++oo   Check all file systems:

		     # //ssbbiinn//ffsscckk --ppff

	   ++oo   Mount all local file systems:

		     # //ssbbiinn//mmoouunntt --aa --tt nnoonnffss

	   ++oo   If you keep _/_u_s_r	or _/_u_s_r_/_s_h_a_r_e on an NFS	server,	you will want
	       to mount	those file systems as well.  To	do this, you will need
	       to enable the network:

	   ++oo   Make sure you are in the	root file system (_/ _a_n_d	_e_x_t_r_a_c_t	_t_h_e)

     _N_o_t_e_:  You	_s_h_o_u_l_d _n_o_t extract the eettcc set if upgrading.  Instead, you
	    should extract that	set into another area and carefully merge the
	    changes by hand.

   CCoommppaattiibbiilliittyy IIssssuueess	WWiitthh PPrreevviioouuss NNeettBBSSDD RReelleeaasseess
     Users upgrading from previous versions of NetBSD may wish to bear the
     following problems	and compatibility issues in mind when upgrading	to
     NetBSD 7.0.1.

     Note that ssyyssiinnsstt will automatically invoke

	   postinstall fix
     and thus all issues that are fixed	by ppoossttiinnssttaallll by default will be han-
     dled.

     A number of things	have been removed from the NetBSD 7.0.1	release.  See
     the ``Components removed from NetBSD'' section near the beginning of this
     document for a list.

     _I_s_s_u_e_s _a_f_f_e_c_t_i_n_g _a_n _u_p_g_r_a_d_e _f_r_o_m _N_e_t_B_S_D _5_._x _r_e_l_e_a_s_e_s

     See the section below on upgrading	from NetBSD 6.x	as well.

     The implementation	of SHA2-HMAC in	KAME_IPSEC as used in NetBSD 5.0 and
     before did	not comply with	current	standards.  FAST_IPSEC does, with the
     result that old and new systems cannot communicate	over IPSEC if one of
     the affected authentication algorithms (hmac_sha256, hmac_sha384,
     hmac_sha512) is used.
